Extraordinary. Noteworthy. Visionary.

Congratulations to Dr. Edward M. Bender for his visionary award.

Edward M. Bender, MD, FACS, is a cardiothoracic surgeon and section chair of cardiothoracic surgery at Saint Francis Medical Center.

Bender is a board certified cardiothoracic surgeon who earned his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, Mich. He completed an internship and a residency at the University of Colorado Denver and a fellowship at the University of Chicago Hospitals

In the past three years, Bender has developed 18 applications (apps) for the iPhone and two apps for the iPad. His apps, geared toward cardiac surgeons and also patients, can be found at the iTunes App Store. Plus, during his 14-year tenure, Bender has continually brought new technology to and pioneered new procedures at the Medical Center.

Some of his apps include …

CV Surgery Ventilator Risk

Prolonged ventilation after open heart surgery is a risk factor that extends ICU stays and increases incurred costs and poorer physiologic outcomes. This application is used to predict the risk of postoperative mechanical ventilation after open-heart surgery.

EuroSCORE Calculator

EuroSCORE stands for European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation. It is a method of predicting the chances of dying during or shortly after undergoing open heart surgery. This application allows the logistic calculation of risk for open-heart surgery.

CV Surgery Risk

Cardiac surgery has inherent risks. This application is designed to estimate the risk of morbidity and mortality following the most common types of open-heart surgery. It is designed to be used as a tool to guide physicians’ discussions with patients, families and healthcare providers regarding the potential outcomes after open-heart surgery.

PCI Risk

Risk stratification for medical procedures is an important part of appropriate therapy for many diseases, including coronary artery disease. This application serves as a simple bedside tool, using common clinical variables, to predict mortality or major adverse cardiac events with percutaneous coronary intervention in the pre-procedural period.

Heart Surgery Risk

This application is designed to give patients and their families an estimate of what the chances for complications or death are for a patient who is considering coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). The calculator is based on data from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons STS National Database® and the Online STS Risk Calculator®.

Saint Francis Medical Partners

The Saint Francis Medical Partners app allows users to search for those physicians or offices by name and then call or locate the address from within the app. Users may also learn more about each physician, including specialties, medical schools attended and residencies completed.

In June 2010, Bender was a guest presenter at a prestigious international conference in Berlin, Germany. Bender presented “Robotic Repair of Cor Triatriatum,” authored by Bender; David Rotolo, CSA; Cardiologist David A. Law, MD, FACC, FSCAI; and Anesthesiologist Jeffrey S. Steele, MD. Robot-assisted repair of valvular heart disease is well documented, as are repairs of common forms of congenital cardiac defects. Bender presented a case demonstrating the totally endoscopic, robot-assisted repair of cor triatriatum, a congenital heart defect, in a 21-year-old female – the first reported case of totally endoscopic repair of this rare congenital anomaly.
