Prenatal Care

Prenatal care (the healthcare you receive during pregnancy) is important for the overall well-being of you and your baby. Expecting mothers who follow prenatal care guidelines supplied by their healthcare providers often delivery healthier babies. Some general prenatal rules of thumb include:

  • Schedule an appointment with your obstetrician/gynecologist for an overall exam.
  • Talk with your doctor about prenatal vitamins.
  • Choose comfortable, loose-fitting maternity clothes and buy as you grow. Cotton is most comfortable. Purchase a well-fitting, supportive bra.
  • Eat well-balanced, nourishing meals and drink six to eight 8-ounce glasses of fluids daily.
  • Exercise in the first and second trimesters as directed by your doctor. Keep your heart rate below 140 beats per minute.
  • Pay attention to your body posture and proper body mechanics.
  • Rest as much as possible. Practice relaxation and breathing techniques.
  • See your dentist. Be sure to inform him/her of your pregnancy.
  • Carry your doctor's telephone number with you at all times.
  • Study your family history for any high-risk health factors you may have.
