Family BirthPlace

The state-of-the-art Family BirthPlace at Saint Francis Medical Center offers expecting parents a personalized birthing experience in a homelike environment. The Family BirthPlace boasts the area's first labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) suites, 16 in total, featuring comfortable, private birthing locales that can accommodate an overnight guest. Most LDRP suites have a private whirlpool tub and shower, TV, radio/CD player, rocking chair or recliner, table and chairs, and room for visiting family members.

A highly experienced staff with more than 200 years of combined experience includes obstetricians/gynecologists; neonatologists; perinatologists; family practitioners; pediatricians; anesthesiologists; neonatal nurse practitioners; and other specialists familiar with the latest technology and techniques for childbirth, such as positioning, touch, music, water, breathing and other relaxation techniques. Additional features of the Family BirthPlace include:

  • The region's first Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit caring for premature and critically ill newborns
  • Two surgical suites dedicated for cesarean sections
  • Three maternity beds for antepartum and postsurgical care
  • New entrance with direct access to the OB floor; open 24 hours a day and staffed by a security guard after Medical Center operating hours
  • A two-bed triage area for increased efficiency
  • Baby-tracking security devices to ensure newborn safety during their stay
  • Open-air garden offering a safe, private place for families to express their feelings
  • Family Room hospitality suite for waiting families
  • Classes for expectant families, such as sibling classes, childbirth classes and breast-feeding classes
  • Bereavement counseling program for parents and families coping with a loss is offered through Saint Francis’ Pastoral Care department
