At Saint Francis Medical Center's Wound Healing and Hyperbarics Center, a certified medical staff with advanced training and leading-edge technology and therapies treats chronic wounds (present more than 30 days and resistant to conventional treatments). Chronic wounds treated include:

• Chronic refractory osteomyelitis
• Crush injuries and severed limbs
• Diabetic foot ulcers
• Ischemic ulcers
• Necrotizing infections

• Postsurgical incisions

With a referral from your primary care physician, Saint Francis' team of vascular surgeons, hospitalists and other Medical Center staff work together to identify the specific cause of the non-healing wound before developing an individualized treatment plan, which may include:

• Infection control
• Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
• Nutrition
• Patient and family education
• Protective devices
• Skin grafting
• Tissue oxygenation
• Transcutaneous oxygen monitor test
• Vascular studies and revascularization (when needed)
• Wound assessment
• Wound debridement

The Wound Healing and Hyperbarics Center's overall healing rate is 86 percent, and 85 percent of those wounds are healed within 16 weeks. On average, wounds treated at the Wound Healing and Hyperbarics Center heal in 10 weeks. Additionally, Wound Healing Center staff exhibits a 96 percent limb salvage rate, another example of improving the quality of life for patients.*

Powerful Partners in Wound Care - Saint Francis Physicians Now Providing Wound Care in Perryville

There is now another option for expert wound care in the region. In addition to the Wound Healing Center at Saint Francis Medical Center, patients can receive leading-edge wound care from Saint Francis physicians in Perryville. Saint Francis is proud to announce its partnership with Perry County Memorial Hospital, which brings Saint Francis vascular surgeon William Tung, MD, and thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon John C. Wiggans, MD, FACS, to a new clinic in Perryville.

Through this new collaboration, specialists are now available in Perryville to provide expert care and develop individualized treatment plans that help patients experience faster healing rates, quicker return to normal activities and improved quality of life. Board certified and fellowship-trained, both Tung and Wiggans have experience using leading-edge technology and therapies to diagnose and treat wounds that have resisted conventional treatments.

Tung earned his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md. He completed a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in vascular surgery at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis. He also served as a research fellow at Washington University Medical Center, investigating genetics involved in thyroid cancer and in abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Wiggans earned his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. He completed residencies at St. Vincent Hospital and Health Care in Indianapolis and at the University of Illinois Hospitals and Clinics in Chicago.
