Heart Hospital

Saint Francis Medical Center recently completed construction of a combined Heart Hospital Cancer Institute, where you have access to advanced treatments and technology - under one convenient roof.

Saint Francis Medical Center's Heart Hospital provides advanced diagnostics, leading-edge cardiac intervention and surgeries, emergency care, cardiac rehabilitation, risk assessments for heart disease, vascular disease screenings and educational programs to patients throughout the region. The highly skilled cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery teams at Saint Francis have achieved mortality rates that are 50 percent lower than the national average and discharge many patients within four days.

Saint Francis is a leader in cardiac innovations, being the region's first Medical Center to perform cardiac catheterization, and continues to lead the way in heart care with state-of-the-art procedures.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Missouri has designated Saint Francis Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care. The designation is based on rigorous, evidence-based, objective selection criteria established in collaboration with expert physicians' and medical organizations' recommendations. The program is part of The Blues® efforts to collaborate with physicians and medical facilities to improve the overall quality and safety of specialty care. To be designated, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield evaluated the range of services in each area of expertise, experience and training of surgeons, quality management programs, clinical pathways, and patient involvement in education and shared decision making.

Saint Francis Medical Center is proud to announce it has again received full Cycle III accreditation with PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (formerly the Society of Chest Pain Centers – SCPC) through 2015 and was the first Chest Pain Center in the region to receive this accreditation.

A Higher Level of Care

Saint Francis Medical Center is home to the region’s first and only dedicated Heart Hospital Cancer Institute. The Heart Hospital features 60 beds, including 50 private acute care beds and 10 cardiac intensive care beds. There are five cardiac catheterization labs, including one electrophsiology lab and one hybrid endovascular lab.

The EP lab is one of the first in the world to use the Philips EP Navigator System, a specialized imaging system.

Advanced Transradial Catheterization Procedure Now Offered at Saint Francis

Saint Francis Medical Center’s Heart Hospital is now performing transradial catheterization. This effective cardiac procedure allows performing physician Duc Nguyen, DO, to assess a heart’s functionality by gaining access to arteries via the patient’s wrist.

More than a million transfemoral catheterizations – most starting with a puncture to the femoral artery in the groin – are performed in the United States each year. However, this approach carries a greater risk of bleeding complications (especially in women and the elderly), more pain and slower recovery. The transradial catheterization approach, performed through the wrist, offers a variety of patient benefits, such as:
• Fewer bleeding complications and less post-procedure pain
• Speedier patient recovery and shorter hospital stays
