Phase II of the Gene E. Huckstep Emergency and Trauma Center expansion and renovation project is almost complete. On February 8, Saint Francis Medical Center will open the doors of the completed Emergency and Trauma Center for patient care. This state-of-the-art facility’s $12 million expansion and renovation will allow the Saint Francis emergency staff to effectively treat the most life-threatening and disabling injuries and give patients exceptional emergency care.
“The reason we are doing this expansion is to increase the ability of patients to access emergency care easily and efficiently,” says M. Kevin Hammond, MD, emergency medicine physician at Saint Francis. “Efficiency is key so we can provide our patients the very best care while also maintaining a good rate of turnover.”
The facility has nearly tripled in size, with 30,000 square feet added to the original 11,600, and a total of 32 treatment rooms. Available to nearly 650,000 people living in Missouri and four neighboring states, this center will provide care to more than 35,000 emergency patients and 2,100 trauma patients annually.
The Emergency and Trauma Center is the region’s only state-designated Level III trauma center. It offers three trauma rooms, two triage rooms, a special procedures room and, upon completion of Phase II, a total of 26 private treatment rooms with direct access to bathrooms. It also houses Saint Francis’ certified Chest Pain Center and accredited Stroke Center, plus many other technology upgrades, including a 64-slice CT scanner, the latest X-ray equipment, a decontamination room, paperless record-keeping system and room monitors to ensure the best emergency and trauma care.
The self-sufficient facility features hospital-based, board certified emergency medicine physicians and trauma surgeons who provide critical care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A highly experienced nursing staff with specialty training in advanced cardiac life support, trauma and pediatrics assists our physicians around the clock, with a dedicated trauma case manager coordinating care for patients.
Saint Francis recently received a prestigious Compass Award from Press Ganey®, a nationwide patient satisfaction survey organization, for showing significant improvement in emergency patient satisfaction scores over the past two years.
