At 9:38 am on Friday, December 30, Saint Francis Medical Center’s Family BirthPlace celebrated its 1,000th delivery of the year, setting a new record for the hospital. The 1,000th birth was also the 100th for the month, breaking the previous record of 98 deliveries.
Ashlyn Paige Stovall was the record-breaking baby, born to parents Jennifer and Zack Stovall of Cape Girardeau. Wendi M. Carns, MD, FACOG, obstetrician/gynecologist at Cape Care for Women, delivered the 6-pound, 15-ounce baby girl.
Since opening in 2001 – after 35 years without obstetric services at Saint Francis – the number of deliveries at the Family BirthPlace has grown each year. The department’s 874 births in 2010 represented a 16 percent increase over the previous record of 752 set in 2009, and an 82 percent increase over the 481 births recorded in 2005.
A new record for number of deliveries in a single day was set on November 11, with 11 births. Also in 2011, Saint Francis celebrated its 10th anniversary since opening the Family BirthPlace and Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) September 10, 2001.
Ashlyn Paige Stovall was the 1,000th baby born in Saint Francis Medical Center’s Family BirthPlace in 2011, the most born in a single year at the hospital since obstetric services were reintroduced at Saint Francis in 2001. Ashlyn is the daughter of Jennifer and Zack Stovall of Cape Girardeau and weighed six pounds, 15 ounces. She is their second daughter.
