Saint Francis Medical Center will offer a free Balance and Fall Prevention Screening from 7:30 to 10 am Wednesday, September 26, in Health and Wellness Center Conference Room 1, 150 S. Mount Auburn Road (Entrance 8). Members of Saint Francis’ Outpatient Rehabilitation team will be on hand to assess people’s fall risk, explain the seriousness of fall-related injuries and offer advice on preventing falls.
Falls are a serious health issue, especially for older adults. According to the National Council on Aging, falls are the leading cause of fatal injuries for Americans 65 and older. More than 2.3 million fall injuries are treated in emergency rooms each year, including 650,000 hospitalizations and 20,000 deaths. The financial toll is also high; the Council projects annual medical costs directly related to non-fatal fall injuries will rise to nearly $55 billion by 2020. Additionally, injuries and fear of serious falls can severely reduce mobility and quality of life.
The free screenings will include a balance evaluation, fall-risk assessment and helpful tips for preventing falls to ensure attendees lead a safe, active and injury-free life.
