The Southeast Missouri State University women’s volleyball team will honor breast cancer survivors during its match against Austin Peay State University on Friday, October 5, at 6:30 pm in Houck Field House. Between the second and third sets, survivors will receive pink volleyballs honoring their journeys.
The Redhawks volleyball team has been part of the local fight against breast cancer since 2000, when former Southeast women’s volleyball coach Cindy Gannon founded Dig for Life to help other women fight this disease after her mother lost her fight. Sponsored by Saint Francis Medical Center, Southeast Athletics and private donors, Dig for Life provides mammograms to area women who otherwise would not receive this important screening.
To raise awareness, the volleyball team wears pink jerseys at all of its October home matches and secures pledges throughout the month.
Since it began in 2000, the Dig for Life program has given nearly 2,000 free mammograms to local women who could not otherwise afford them. In the last two years, other sports teams at the university have joined the fight, including men’s baseball, women’s gymnastics, women’s soccer and women’s basketball. Each $100 raised provides the crucial screening to one local woman at no cost to her.
