Saint Francis Medical Center’s Cancer Institute is offering a free prostate screening on September 11 from 8 am to noon in the Saint Francis Registration Center. Screenings include a digital rectal exam and PSA blood draw.
According to the American Cancer Society®, 217,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men – following skin cancer – claiming 27,360 lives last year. Regular screenings offer the ability to diagnose prostate cancer in the earliest stage, when there is the best chance of curing it.
“While the incidence of prostate cancer seems overwhelming, ongoing education and regular screenings are the keys to reducing these numbers,” says Dennis Van Asche, administrative director of Cancer Services at Saint Francis. “Through the free prostate screening, Saint Francis has the opportunity to bring awareness to this disease and, at the same time, let men know if symptoms they have been experiencing – like blocked or decreased urinary flow – are due to the presence of cancer.”
Men who meet one or more of the following criteria are eligible for the free screening: • Between 50 and 74 years old • Between 35 and 49 years old with a family history (father, brother, uncle) of prostate cancer • African-American or Hispanic descent and 35 years or older
No appointment is necessary, and results will be available six to eight weeks after the screening. For more information on the free prostate screening, call 573-331-5877.
Saint Francis Medical Center is located at 211 Saint Francis Drive, Cape Girardeau, MO. For more information call 573-331-3000.
