Rehabilitation Services at Saint Francis Medical Center offers a comprehensive rehabilitative healthcare program featuring inpatient, outpatient and sports medicine services. Highly trained therapists and assistants work with patients to improve health and achieve various levels of independence.

Inpatient Rehabilitation Services

As the leading inpatient rehabilitation facility in the region, Saint Francis' state-of-the-art, 23-bed unit offers comprehensive and coordinated programs in one convenient location for patients with cognitive, physical, functional and behavioral deficits.Inpatient Rehabilitation includes:

Beauty shop

Beauty shop services were established at Saint Francis Medical Center in 1969. Services are available to rehab (1G) patients only.  Volunteers pamper patients on an appointment basis every Friday from 8:30 am to 12 noon.

Hearing assessments

Upon completion of a referral-based hearing assessment, healthcare providers at Saint Francis Medical Center offer suggestions to patients on hearing devices and other treatments.

Neuropsychology services

As the only provider in the region with both a neuropsychologist and a behavioral psychologist on staff, Saint Francis Medical Center provides expert care for patients suffering from emotional/cognitive problems due to bodily injury. Inpatient rehabilitation staff helps patients develop coping skills, establish appropriate expectations and modify their lifestyle in accordance with any physical limitations to maintain a positive outlook on life.

Nutritional services

After an initial assessment, patients are provided with an individualized nutrition plan to follow during their stay and are checked on a weekly basis by Saint Francis Medical Center's dietitians and aides. At discharge, patients may receive additional feedback on future nutritional concerns.

Occupational therapy

Focused on increasing independence and improving quality of life, occupational therapists and assistants at Saint Francis Medical Center develop individualized treatment programs for patients to help them reach goals in regard to the social, emotional and physiological effects of illnesses and injuries, including spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and dementia. Caregivers also assist patients in restoring daily living activities, such as self-care, work and leisure.

Physical therapy

Through the use of exercises and applications that promote and restore normal function and development, physical therapists and assistants at Saint Francis Medical Center help patients overcome injuries and other physically debilitating conditions.

Recreational therapy

Saint Francis Medical Center's recreational therapy caregivers work with patients to improve skills and provide information needed to ensure successful adjustment into their home or community environment.

Respiratory therapy

Respiratory therapists at Saint Francis Medical Center help patients offset conditions and diseases affecting breathing by providing advanced treatments, such as endotracheal intubation, ventilator management, arterial line insertion, high frequency oscillatory ventilation, nitric oxide and heliox (under the direction of a physician). Additionally, respiratory therapists offer aerosolized medication and pulmonary hygiene (breathing exercises, postural drainage and percussion).

Social work

Social workers at Saint Francis Medical Center meet with the family members of patients to counsel them in regard to lifestyle changes and connect them to community resources to meet patients' needs.

Speech therapy

Saint Francis Medical Center provides speech evaluations and assessments of language and swallowing, as well as all areas of speech pathology. After an initial assessment is completed, a plan of care is established with input from the patient's family. 

Outpatient Rehabilitation Services

Meet the therapists

Saint Francis' Outpatient Rehabilitation Services offers comprehensive and coordinated programs for adults and children in a new, state-of-the-art, medically integrated facility (featuring three swimming pools) at the Health and Wellness Center. Members of the interdisciplinary treatment team work together to develop individualized rehabilitation plans to improve health and achieve various levels of independence. Outpatient Rehabilitation Services includes:

Aquatic therapy

Aquatic therapy facilitates basic treatment techniques used in the gym by including the properties of water (buoyancy, resistance, support and warmth) to challenge and strengthen the patient's balance, coordination, muscle, endurance, range of motion and tone.

Back school

Back school offers a basic introduction to spinal anatomy, proper lifting techniques and body postures, as well as an opportunity for participants to practice these skills.

Clinics

Clinics include adult muscular dystrophy, pediatric muscular dystrophy, pediatric neurology and genetics.

Driver evaluation/training

Driver evaluation/training helps physically challenged individuals maintain their driving independence by determining proper adaptive driving controls and providing on-the-road training.

Hand therapy

Hand therapy offers specialized treatment to patients who have lost range of motion, strength or endurance in their hands or arms due to illness or trauma.

Hearing services

Upon completion of a referral-based hearing assessment, healthcare providers at Saint Francis Medical Center offer suggestions to patients on hearing devices and other treatments.

Home Health

The Home Health program at Saint Francis Medical Center features caring, highly skilled therapists, nurses and aides who provide various healthcare services to people confined to their homes. Individualized plans of care are developed for qualified patients based on input from physicians, Home Health staff and at-home caregivers.

Incontinence

Various treatments are available to women who suffer from urinary or fecal incontinence.

Lymphedema management

The lymphedema management program offers complete decongestive therapy (CDT) for the care and management of lymphedema. CDT involves multiple treatment methods to help reduce tissue swelling, avoid swelling recurrence, prevent additional infections and regain mobility. Although there is no cure for lymphedema, CDT enables patients to better manage the condition.

Orthotics

Seventy-five percent of Americans experience foot problems at one time or another. At Saint Francis Medical Center, feet are scanned by a computerized system that generates a 3-D view of each foot to ensure a proper fit before orthotics are processed. Customized orthotics can be installed in running shoes, heels, dress shoes, work shoes or any other foot ware. The goal is to provide enhanced biomechanics and feet alignment.

Pediatric rehabilitation

The specialized pediatric rehabilitation program supports an interdisciplinary team approach to treating communication, physical, social and behavioral needs. Therapists are experienced at keeping children motivated during therapy sessions.

Regional Arthritis Center

The Southeast Missouri Regional Arthritis Center at Saint Francis Medical Center is one of seven centers of its kind approved by the Missouri Health Department to provide education and information about arthritis (a leading cause of disability that affects one in three adults in Missouri). Services are provided by trained professionals and available to assist people living with arthritis and osteoporosis.

Work injury training

Work injury training offers individualized programs and therapies designed to get injured workers back on the job quickly. Therapists use a variety of resources to create a job-specific conditioning program in a simulated work environment.

Sports Medicine

The Sports Medicine program at Saint Francis Medical Center utilizes a team of physical therapists, exercise therapists, certified athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning specialists to address each athlete's condition and get them back in the game. Sports Medicine personnel also offer Saint Francis Medical Center's Acceleration, designed to help people enhance their athletic performance in any sport. Additionally, free sports injury clinics are offered.
