Resolve to Make It a Healthy New Year
Vowing to lose weight is one of the most popular New Year's resolutions. Yet millions of well-intended Americans who start a diet on Jan. 1 are back to their old habits in a matter of days.
"That excess weight didn't appear overnight, and it's not going to disappear that quickly either," says Janet Anders, RD, LD, a dietitian at Fitness Plus. "Anyone on a diet should set a realistic long-term goal and then choose weekly mini-goals to stay motivated."
Other tips to help you stay the diet course:
- Make breakfast a priority.
- Eat more high-fiber foods.
- Try a meatless meal once a week.
- Enjoy a variety of foods, and try new low-fat recipes that are easy to prepare.
- Store food out of sight to discourage snacking.
- Find a partner and collaborate in weight and exercise goals.
- Have patience and don't let a setback derail you.
