Take Control of Your Blood Pressure
It is estimated one in four American adults has high blood pressure (also known as hypertension), a potentially dangerous condition that overworks the heart and contributes to hardening of the arteries. Left untreated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack, congestive heart failure, kidney damage, blindness and other harmful conditions.
"Once it develops, hypertension usually lasts a lifetime," says William K. LaFoe, MD, FACC, a cardiologist on staff at Saint Francis Medical Center. "While it cannot be cured, hypertension can be controlled."
You can take steps to prevent high blood pressure by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Eat properly and lose weight if necessary. Cut back on salt intake, exercise regularly and manage stress effectively. Stop smoking and limit your alcohol intake. If lifestyle changes alone can't control your blood pressure, medication may be necessary.
