Saint Francis Foundation
"It is in Giving that we Receive." This philosophy is the cornerstone of the Saint Francis Foundation and provides a guide to contributing to the overall efforts of Saint Francis Medical Center as it continues to meet the medical needs of patients throughout the five-state region.
Since 1976, the Foundation has secured financial support through the generosity of the community, volunteers and Medical Center staff for new medical technology, special projects, capital expansion, long-term financial stability and other needs as identified by Saint Francis. Funds are generated through:
Dig for Life was started in 2000 by Cindy Gannon (former Head Coach of Southeast Missouri State University's women's volleyball team and now Senior Woman Administrator and Associate Athletic Director) and is sponsored by Saint Francis Medical Center to educate women throughout the region about the importance of early breast cancer detection. Dig for Life provides free mammography screenings, transportation to medical treatments and other support by generating charitable donations.
Dig for Life is held annually in October to coincide with National Breast Cancer Awareness month. The women's volleyball team members secure pledges for each defensive dig at home matches in October, and monies collected are allocated to nearby medical facilities. Since 2000, the campaign has generated more than $50,000.
The Grateful Patient Program gives patients and their families an opportunity to recognize the very good care they received from their team of caregivers at Saint Francis Medical Center. Donations generated by this program help fund the addition of essential technologies and vital services, such as the region's first digital echocardiography machine, the expansion of the region's first Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and ongoing program support for the Regional Arthritis Center.
The Friends of Saint Francis offer a great day of golfing fun through the
Ken Hayden Memorial Golf Tournament. In memory of the Medical Center's dear friend Ken Hayden, this tournament (held annually in May) is a unique mixed doubles scramble with a touch of elegance that raises funds to benefit various Saint Francis initiatives. Download the

A shining success since its beginnings in 2001, the Luminaries for Life program has raised nearly $50,000 for Saint Francis Medical Center. With over 10,000 holiday lights displayed in the Medical Center's Healing Garden, the event fills people's hearts with memories of loved ones past and wishes of health and happiness for the future. Gifts can be made in honor or in memory of friends and loved ones at any of the following illuminating levels:
- $10-$99 adds a Light in the Healing Garden
- $100-$499 lights a Luminary
- $500 or more lights a Star or an Angel
Donors are invited to a special "Night of Remembrance" during the holiday season to honor those who have touched their lives over the years. It is a time of reflection and remembrance for everyone as the names of loved ones are read aloud.
Planned or deferred gifts made through your estate plan provide a means for making a major contribution to the Saint Francis Foundation. Gifts can be a specific amount or a percentage of the remainder of your estate. Gift-giving options include:
Checks
Checks made payable to the Saint Francis Foundation.
Bequests
A bequest is a specific sum, percentage or residue of an estate that may consist of cash, securities, insurance proceeds, real estate and/or personal property directed to the Saint Francis Foundation through a will or by a living trust.
Life Insurance
Gifts of life insurance allow you to make sizeable gifts at a relatively low cost by naming the Saint Francis Foundation as the irrevocable beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Simply designate the Foundation as the primary, secondary, remainder or residual beneficiary of a policy. When you pay the annual premium, you will be entitled to deduct that amount on your itemized tax return.
Trusts
A trust is a gift plan that allows you to provide income to yourself or others while making a generous gift to the Saint Francis Foundation. The income may continue for the lifetime of the named beneficiaries or a fixed term not to exceed 20 years. When the trust ends, the remaining principal passes to the Foundation.
Charitable Gift Annuity
In the case of a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA), an irrevocable gift is made to the Saint Francis Foundation in exchange for guaranteed income for life. This is an irrevocable life-income agreement with fixed payout based on age. A CGA is a simple contract between you and the Foundation. You may specify whether you want an immediate annuity with payments to begin quarterly or a deferred-gift annuity with payments beginning at a specified future date.
Gifts of Stock
Gifts of stocks and bonds are excellent ways to invest in the mission of the Saint Francis Foundation. Giving stock allows you to receive a full deduction of the entire value of the asset while avoiding capital gains taxes incurred if sold. A gift may be unrestricted, allowing the Foundation to direct it to the area of greatest need; however, you may specify an area to benefit from your gift. It is the Foundation Board's policy to sell stocks immediately.
The 1875 Founder's Society is the Foundation's first major giving club. The 1875 Founder's Society was named after our founders who established Saint Francis Hospital in 1875. Even in those days, the Franciscan Sisters offered the latest in medical treatments and had a distinct vision for the future of the Medical Center. The club honors annual donor contributions of $5,000, which are used to fund new services and state-of-the-art technology at Saint Francis.
The Friends of Saint Francis was formally organized in 1975 to assist the Saint Francis Foundation in providing services and financial assistance to Saint Francis Medical Center. Since its beginnings, the organization has given more than $1.75 million in support to the Medical Center. The Friends Board is comprised of people from the community and Saint Francis employees who are committed to serving the Medical Center in an active way. These loyal supporters volunteer for various events, such as the annual The Friends of Saint Francis Benefit Golf Tournament, Operation Freedom and book sales, and consistently act as "boosters" for Saint Francis. Membership fees are:
- Adult: $25
- Youth: $10 (Must be under age 18)
- Life: $200
Benefits include the opportunity to support healthcare services throughout the Saint Francis service area, exclusive member invitations to sponsored trips, two editions of The Friends newsletter and The Friends window decal.
The event hosted by The Friends of Saint Francis is the annual Benefit Golf Tournament. This prestigious event draws more than 250 golfers to the links at Bent Creek Golf Course in Jackson each August. Much planning and preparation goes into this tournament, as yearly proceeds are used to enhance services and technology at Saint Francis Medical Center.
