Breast cancer surgery takes a serious toll on your body. Regular exercise and proper nutrition can do wonders for helping you feel like yourself more quickly. “Even small amounts of exercise can help boost your energy,” says Mark A. Meadors, DO, medical oncologist/hematologist at Saint Francis Medical Center. “Start with short walks around the block, then gradually increase your duration and intensity.”
Proper nutrition can help your body recover from the surgery. Even if you do not feel like eating, you should increase your protein intake. “Your body needs protein so it can repair cells and fight infection,” says Meadors. “Try high-protein snacks like nuts and cheese, and eat as much meat as possible. The more protein you consume, the quicker your incision will heal.”
Another nutrition suggestion: If you experience nausea and vomiting right after surgery, eat several small meals throughout the day to calm your stomach.
