Saint Francis Medical Center’s new, first-in-the-region genetic counseling program can answer many cancer patients’ frequently asked questions. The program, led by Melanie Baxter, ScM, CGC, board certified genetic counselor, offers patients an opportunity to be proactive in understanding and managing their cancer risk.
“One of the common questions we get from cancer patients is ‘what about my family?’” says Carlos Robles, MD, medical oncologist and hematologist at Saint Francis. “They’re concerned their loved ones could get this disease, too. Through genetic counseling, we can learn whether cancer of the breast, colon or ovaries or other hereditary medical problems run in the family. Then we can start figuring out what the risk is and decide whether further intervention will be helpful.”
