As your child reaches adolescence, it is important for them to have visits at least every other year with their pediatrician for screenings. “We need to check our teenagers’ development during these years because things are changing so rapidly as their bodies and minds begin the transition to adulthood,” says Joy L. LeDoux-Johnson, MD, pediatrician and internal medicine physician at Saint Francis Medical Center. “During these years, their emotional development is crucial and your pediatrician is a good source of information and support.”
Periodic screenings are also important for identifying risk factors for drug or alcohol abuse and depression. “These screenings are good opportunities for discussing those subjects that impact our adolescents such as substance abuse, sexuality, depression and driving safety,” says LeDoux-Johnson. “Counseling can be beneficial. Seeking help at the right time will impact the rest of their lives.”
