Warm water can be quite soothing for people who suffer from arthritis. Saint Francis Medical Center’s Fitness Plus offers warm water aquatics for arthritis patients every day of the week.
“When you exercise in water, you can improve your range of motion, relieve joint stiffness and build muscle strength,” says Sandy Duncan, MSA, HFS, manager of health and wellness at Saint Francis. “Our arthritis patients experience tremendous pain relief when they participate in these classes.”
The classes also help participants meet others who suffer from arthritis. “Arthritis is a chronic disease that can be isolating,” says Duncan. “Some people stay at home because they hurt so much. These classes give them a social outlet.”
Preregistration is required for the classes, which are free for Fitness Plus members and $37 per month (three times a week) for non-members. Financial assistance is available, thanks to the Cape Girardeau Senior Citizens’ Service Fund Board, for those who qualify. For more information or to enroll, call 573-331-5993.
