Avoiding Hip Fractures

Hip fractures are a common injury in our aging population. Because they can be devastating for a person who already has several other health problems, it is best to take steps to avoid fractures. “In the older population, you have to be very honest with yourselves about what your physical abilities are,” says R. August Ritter III, MD, orthopedic surgeon at Saint Francis Medical Center. “If you are unsteady on your feet, have trouble with your blood pressure and become lightheaded when you get up, you need to be realistic about your activity level.”

If you do experience a hip fracture, it is important to have family support. “We try to get the family involved in the patient’s care,” says Ritter. “The sooner they realize what the problem is and what they can do to help the patient heal, the better they can participate.”
