A Body Needs Iron

Iron deficiency anemia is when your body does not have enough healthy red blood cells to deliver oxygen sufficiently to all tissues. It occurs when your cells do not have enough iron.

One of the most common symptoms of iron deficiency anemia is extreme fatigue. “When a patient complains of feeling tired all the time, we check iron levels right away,” says Sara A. Lorenz, MD, FACOG, obstetrician and gynecologist, Saint Francis Medical Partner. “Fortunately, iron supplements usually can help bring your red blood cells up to the right level.”

Other signs of iron deficiency anemia include:

  • Weakness
  • Pale skin
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Headache or lightheadedness
  • Brittle nails

“If you believe you have iron deficiency anemia, do not self-treat with iron supplements,” says Lorenz. “See your doctor right away.”
