Coloring Your Hair While Pregnant

Hundreds of young women regularly color their hair. When they become pregnant, one often-asked question is whether dyeing their hair will harm the baby. The answer is not as simple as you might think.

Coloring your hair is probably safe. However, this particular issue has never been fully studied. There is no data to tell us whether hair dye is harmful. A good rule of thumb is to limit your exposure to any kinds of chemicals during pregnancy – including chemicals used when coloring your hair.

The Food and Drug Administration recommends wearing gloves when applying hair dye. You should also follow all package instructions carefully, leaving the dye on your hair no longer than directed and rinsing your scalp after using the dye.
