When you are determining the best treatment for an orthopedic problem, it is important to have open communication with your physician. “You should be able to trust your doctor,” says Patrick R. Knight, MD, orthopedic surgeon at Saint Francis Medical Center. “You need to feel that he or she has your best interest in mind.”
When you have a good relationship with your doctor, you have a better chance at a good outcome. “Whether we decide to treat your issue with surgery or through nonsurgical methods, you will do better when you have confidence in the process,” says Knight.
“But you need to remember that this relationship is a two-way street,” continues Knight. “You should tell your doctor all necessary information about your condition and symptoms so he or she can develop an appropriate treatment plan. We both need to be committed to the process.”
