Untreated thyroid problems can cause depression, weight gain and loss of energy, and can put you at risk for heart disease, infertility and many other medical problems. The following are some classic signs of a thyroid issue:
- Fatigue – People with hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) often feel like they need a nap midway through the day.
- Weight changes – “Hypothyroidism can make it difficult to lose weight, while hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) can cause you to lose weight while eating the same amount of food you normally do,” says Kimberly K. Roos, MD, FACOG, obstetrician and gynecologist at Saint Francis Medical Center.
- Depression and anxiety – If medications are not helping your depression, you may have hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, can cause anxiety problems and panic attacks.
