If you suffer from heartburn, you know all too well how uncomfortable you become when you eat the wrong foods. “Heartburn occurs when stomach acids return to the esophagus and cause a burning sensation,” says Victoria E. Adjovu, MD, internal medicine physician at Saint Francis Medical Center. “The best way to avoid it is by simply avoiding foods that commonly trigger heartburn.”
The top 10 heartburn food triggers are:
- Citrus fruits
- Onions and garlic
- Spicy foods
- Fatty foods like cheese, nuts, avocados and steaks
- Carbonated drinks
You do not necessarily need to avoid these foods for the rest of your life, but try taking them out of your diet and then slowly reintroducing them in small amounts. “It might be easiest to keep a food diary to see which foods are your worst triggers,” says Adjovu.
