Everyone wants a flatter stomach. The good news is the belly reacts more quickly to dietary changes (good and bad) than other areas of the body. For instance, avoiding gassy vegetables, chewing gum, carbonated beverages, salt and foods with sugar alcohols will reduce bloating and water retention. Other tricks to help slim down and lose inches from your waist include:
- Go to bed an hour earlier. Getting adequate sleep will make you less likely to overeat the next day. It also prevents overproduction of cortisol (the stress hormone), which can cause you to overeat and may also cause more fat cells to be stored in the belly area.
- Drink water, not soda.
- Eat whole grains and proteins. Studies indicate that dieters who ate these types of food lost twice as much abdominal fat as those who ate none. This might be because whole grains reduce production of insulin, which is another chemical that encourages fat storage.
- Eat meals slowly. Relax, savor each bite and pay attention to feelings of fullness. Odds are you’ll eat less, thereby keeping fat off your belly.
