When hospitalized patients are critically ill, they benefit from the attention of a full-time physician. Hospitalists are internal medicine specialists who care for patients while they are in the hospital. Saint Francis Healthcare System staffs hospitalists 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“Because we are stationed in the hospital, we can answer patients’ and family members’ questions right away,” says Michael S. Flaim, DO, hospitalist, Saint Francis Medical Partner. “We are in constant communication with our patients’ primary care physicians so we have the information we need to care for them.”
Hospitalists know all specialties and departments at Saint Francis and are able to facilitate quick follow-up when the need arises. “If a critically ill patient suddenly deteriorates, we are available to change his or her treatment immediately,” says Flaim. “We can also shorten the wait time for lab and imaging tests, which helps in diagnosing problems.”
