If your student athlete experiences an injury on the field or court, he or she may benefit from Kinesio taping. Kinesio tape is a special type of
tape often used to treat and prevent sports injuries.
“The elastic properties and adhesive ability of the tape are what make it so useful,” says Jimmy D. Bowen, MD, FAAPMR, CSCS, physiatrist at Saint Francis Medical Center. “But it needs to be applied by someone who is certified in the technique to gain maximum benefit.”
Lance Eaker, MS, ATC, CKTP®, athletic trainer at Saint Francis and certified Kinesio taping practitioner, uses Kinesio tape to help a muscle move after it has been strained, or to increase stability and stretch muscle tissue to relieve tightness. “This tape can stay on for up to five days,” says Eaker. “I have seen that it lasts longer and is more effective than other tapes.”
