Know Bacterial Meningitis Signs

Bacterial meningitis is a serious infection that can be fatal if not treated right away. Those who are at highest risk for this infection include babies; people who spend a large amount of time in community settings, such as college students; or people who have traveled to sub-Saharan Africa.

“The symptoms of bacterial meningitis can mimic those of the flu in its early stages,” says Laura E. Glueck, DO, family practice physician, Saint Francis Medical Partner. “It is important to see your doctor right away if you experience several of the signs.”

Signs of meningitis include:

  • Confusion
  • Sudden high fever
  • Stiff neck
  • Vomiting
  • Headache that does not go away

Signs of meningitis in a baby include:

  • Excessive crying
  • Refusal to feed
  • Excessive sleeping
  • Sluggishness
