When a patient is diagnosed with a chronic or life-limiting illness, Saint Francis Medical Center’s Palliative Care Program can help manage pain and provide comfort for that patient. “Our team of physicians, nurses, chaplains and other caregivers work with the patient and his or her family to address needs specific to the situation,” says Kennett D. Asher, DO, CMD, family medicine physician and medical director of the Palliative Care Program.
Under the program, patients can freely share their quality- or end-of-life feelings and discuss their concerns with caregivers who are experts in their field. “It is important to remember that palliative care is not only for patients who are at the end of their lives,” says Asher. “Patients can enter the program at any stage of their illness. They can discuss treatment options and understand their disease more clearly with the help of our caregivers.”
