Signs of a Heart Attack

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, but when you know all the signs and symptoms of a heart attack, you can save a life.

“A heart attack does not always begin with chest pain,” says Duc T. Nguyen, DO, interventional cardiologist at Saint Francis Medical Center. “There are many early warning signs including fatigue, nausea, feeling of fullness, shortness of breath and jaw pain. These symptoms come and go – they are not always sudden and intense. If you experience these signs, you should call 911 right away.”

Nguyen_Duc“During a heart attack, your heart is not receiving the oxygen it needs,” says Nguyen. “You need immediate treatment to save your heart muscle.”

Saint Francis is encouraging all southeast Missouri residents to take an oath to educate themselves and others on the early signs and symptoms of a heart attack. To take the online oath, visit www.sfmc.net/dev-2015/heartattacksigns.
