In the summer heat, it is important to stay hydrated. Dehydration can land you in the hospital and cause serious injury. The following tips are to keep you in top form:
- Carry water wherever you go: If you do not have a reusable water bottle, buy one. When you run out of water, you can fill up at the nearest drinking fountain or water faucet.
- Try different beverages: Any fluid can help hydrate you, including smoothies, coffee, tea and sports drinks.
- Avoid alcohol before exercising: “Alcohol dehydrates you,” says Joseph B. Schuerger, MD, family practice physician at Black River Medical Center. “It decreases your body’s production of a hormone it uses to reabsorb water.”
- Consume foods that contain water: Most fruits and vegetables have large amounts of water, so powering up with these foods before performing a strenuous activity can be helpful.
