Stay Hydrated

In the summer heat, it is important to stay hydrated. Dehydration can land you in the hospital and cause serious injury. The following tips are to keep you in top form:

  • Carry water wherever you go: If you do not have a reusable water bottle, buy one. When you run out of water, you can fill up at the nearest drinking fountain or water faucet.
  • Try different beverages: Any fluid can help hydrate you, including smoothies, coffee, tea and sports drinks.Schuerger_JosephMD
  • Avoid alcohol before exercising: “Alcohol dehydrates you,” says Joseph B. Schuerger, MD, family practice physician at Black River Medical Center. “It decreases your body’s production of a hormone it uses to reabsorb water.”
  • Consume foods that contain water: Most fruits and vegetables have large amounts of water, so powering up with these foods before performing a strenuous activity can be helpful.
