Cold season is coming, but that does not mean you need to fall victim to the virus.
There are simple steps you can take to stop a cold from spreading. Washing your hands is the most effective way to keep yourself healthy. “You cannot keep cold germs out of your house,” says Gilbert Smith, MD, family medicine physician at Physicians Park Primary Care and Immediate Convenient Care. “But you can protect yourself from them by washing frequently with soap and water.”
When someone in your house is sick, use a disinfecting spray or wipe on tables, countertops, doorknobs and toys. Germs can also be spread via shared hand towels in the bathroom, so consider using paper towels until everyone is healthy again.
“Germs are spread through droplets of water expelled in sneezes and coughs,” says Smith. “When you are sick, sneeze and cough into the crook of your arm, not your hand.”
