If you feel tired all the time, there may be a simple reason, such as not sleeping or not exercising enough or not eating a healthy diet. Or, you could suffer from one of several medical conditions that cause fatigue.
Thyroid problems can cause low energy, as can uncontrolled diabetes. If you have lost your appetite and feel sad in addition to tired, you may suffer from depression. Anemia, or lack of iron in the blood, can also cause fatigue.
“Or, you may not be receiving good, quality sleep,” says Bradley K. Bittle, MD, FCCP, D-ABSM, pulmonologist and sleep medicine physician at Cape Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine. “There are many sleep disorders that cause exhaustion. Sleep apnea, for example, causes you to stop breathing several times during the night, which can interrupt your sleep and cause other problems. You may need to contact your primary care physician to see if a sleep study or other testing is needed.”
