A cold sore is a small sore on the face or inside the mouth that is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). While you cannot cure a cold sore, you can ease the pain while you wait for it to heal.
Apply ice. If your cold sore is tingling, try applying ice for five to 10 minutes every hour. This takes away pain by numbing the area and prevents the sore from growing bigger by decreasing blood flow.
Use an over-the-counter medication such as Abreva®. You can apply these medications several times a day to relieve pain. “For cold sores that are especially painful, your doctor can prescribe an antiviral medication that speeds healing,” says Joseph B. Schuerger, MD, family practice physician at Black River Medical Center.
Take ibuprofen. This medication can reduce swelling and ease the pain.
