The best way to consume the vitamins and minerals you need is to eat a healthy diet. However, if you do not eat enough fruits and vegetables, you should supplement your diet with vitamins.
“Hardly any Americans consume enough calcium in their diets,” says Janna R. Crosnoe, MD, family practice physician at Saint Francis Medical Center. “That is why calcium supplements are a good place to start. Vitamin D is also an important dietary supplement. While the sun is a good source of vitamin D, it is difficult to obtain the sun you need during the winter months.”
If you do not eat enough vegetables, you will need vitamins A and C, as well. It is best to take these vitamins individually. “Multivitamins have never been proven to decrease your risk for many diseases as well as single vitamins,” says Crosnoe.
