Watch Infants for Signs of Autism

Autism has increased tenfold in the last 40 years. So, too, have questions like: “What is autism?” and “How do I know if my child has it?”

“The definition of autism is complex, since autism spectrum disorder includes several disorders of neural development,” says Andrew Godbey, MD, MSPH, neurologist at Saint Francis Medical Center. “Autism and other disorders on the autism spectrum are typically characterized by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behavior.”

Godbey_AndrewAccording to Autism Speaks, an organization dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatment and cure for autism, see your physician if your child exhibits these red flags:

  • No big smiles by six months
  • No babbling by 12 months
  • No words by 16 months
  • No two-word phrases by 24 months
  • Any loss of speech, babbling or social skills at any age
