Fitness Plus will host an open house for its new Fit Kids program Saturday, September 7, from 9 to 10:30 am in the Health and Wellness Center multipurpose room, 150 S. Mount Auburn Road (Entrance 8).
Children and families will learn about a healthy lifestyle by participating in fun activities that show kids the importance of good nutrition and physical fitness. Refreshments will be served.
The Fit Kids program focuses on physical activity and nutritional information for children ages 6 to 12. It is modeled after the American Council on Exercise’s Operation FitKids program. The first session will run September 16 to November 6.
It is no secret that poor nutrition and inactivity are putting today’s youth at risk of developing life-threatening diseases as they age. According to the American Obesity Association, approximately 30 percent of children ages 6 to 12 are overweight and 15 percent are obese.
Fit Kids is led by a certified fitness specialist and will include pre- and post-assessments of basic nutrition and physical activity, age-appropriate fitness exercises and activities, proper nutrition education and attendance and participation rewards. Those completing the program will celebrate their accomplishments at a graduation ceremony.
Registration is required to participate in the seven-week session. The cost is $25 for children included on a Fitness Plus family membership; $45 for children whose parents are members; and $65 for non-members. Scholarships are available for families with financial need.
