3-D Screening for Breast Cancer

May 30, 2012

Women seeking mammograms in southeast Missouri have the latest screening and diagnostic technology available to them at Womancare and Saint Francis Clinic Poplar Bluff. These are the only facilities in the region to offer 3-D breast tomosynthesis utilizing the Selenia® Dimensions® digital mammography system.

The Selenia Dimensions system offers exceptionally sharp breast images, advanced ergonomic design for enhanced patient comfort and ground-breaking 3-D tomosynthesis platform designed to deliver superior screening and diagnostic performance.

Breast tomosynthesis is a revolutionary technology that gives radiologists the ability to identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue. During a tomosynthesis exam, multiple images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3-D reconstruction of the breast.

By offering the latest mammography technology, Womancare and Saint Francis Clinic Poplar Bluff hope to increase the number of women who will be routinely screened. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 97 percent.

Saint Francis Healthcare System is committed to the fight against breast cancer. By offering 3-D breast tomosynthesis digital mammography, we provide the latest in imaging quality.
