Inpatient Rehab Wall of Fame: Sue Ludwig
Sue Ludwig presented to a St. Louis hospital with a severe traumatic brain injury following a helmeted motorcycle wreck in October of 2024. Due to medical complications, she eventually required amputation of both of her legs in December of that same year. After her initial hospitalization in St. Louis, Sue spent some time at another facility before continuing her recovery journey at the Inpatient Rehab Unit at Saint Francis Medical Center.
Sue arrived at inpatient rehab facing significant challenges with mobility and daily tasks. Over the next two and a half weeks, she worked closely with her therapy team to rebuild strength and confidence. Each day brought new progress – from learning how to move safely in and out of bed, to mastering the skills needed for dressing, bathing, and grooming on her own. By the end of her stay, she was independently completing her personal care and transferring in and out of her wheelchair without physical help. Her determination and the support of her care team helped her regain not just function, but freedom. Her family stood by her side every step of the way, making sure no detail was overlooked. From thoughtful home modifications to unwavering emotional support, they did everything possible to help her return home safely and confidently.
In January 2025, Sue was able to return home with her husband, Lynne, marking a major milestone in her recovery. Since then, she has been working hard on walking again with the help of her outpatient therapy team and pre-prosthetic training. Her journey has been nothing short of inspiring – driven by tenacity, faith, and a deep motivation to reclaim her independence. She brought joy to every therapy session, always smiling and never losing hope. Her determination to become mobile again is a testament to the power of perseverance and the steadfast dedication of her family. It is because of these qualities, Sue is being recognized for the Inpatient Rehab Wall of Fame.
Sue states, “The care, concern and positivity shown to me by everyone in Inpatient Rehab at St. Francis was the encouragement I needed to accomplish my goals and create new goals that I didn’t think were possible following my amputations.”
