Outpatient Rehabilitation

Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services in Cape Girardeau

Saint Francis’ Outpatient Rehabilitation Services offers comprehensive and coordinated programs for adults and children in a state-of-the-art, medically integrated facility (featuring three swimming pools) at the Health and Wellness Center. Members of the interdisciplinary treatment team work together to develop individualized rehabilitation plans to improve health and achieve various levels of independence. After completing outpatient rehabilitation, patients have the opportunity to continue their rehabilitative exercises through Fitness Plus, also in the Health and Wellness Center. At Fitness Plus, patients can use the same exercise equipment they used in their rehabilitation programs, and their physical therapists are in the same facility should questions or problems arise.

In addition to treating all general orthopedic and neurological related diagnoses, Outpatient Rehabilitation offers the following specialty programs:

Physical Therapy

Through the use of exercises and applications that promote and restore normal function and development, physical therapists and assistants at Saint Francis Medical Center help patients overcome injuries and other physically debilitating conditions.

Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy facilitates basic treatment techniques used in the gym by including the properties of water (buoyancy, resistance, support and warmth) to challenge and strengthen the patient’s balance, coordination, muscle, endurance, range of motion and tone.

Back School

Back school offers a basic introduction to spinal anatomy, proper lifting techniques and body postures, as well as an opportunity for participants to practice these skills.

Balance and Fall Prevention

The balance and fall prevention program is designed for a wide variety of patients and families. The program involves a thorough assessment of a patient’s overall health to identify contributing factors to falls and fall risk. Therapy is utilized to address strength, balance and walking to improve mobility and lessen a person’s risk for falls and injuries that can occur as a result of falling.

Free Injury Screens

By treating injuries and ailments quickly, Saint Francis’ Rehabilitation Services makes it easy for athletes of all ages and levels to reach and maintain peak performance. Physical therapists and athletic trainers perform injury screens.

Hand Therapy

Hand therapy offers specialized treatment to patients who have lost range of motion, strength or endurance in their hands or arms due to illness or trauma.

Industrial Rehabilitation

Industrial rehabilitation offers individualized programs and therapies designed to get injured workers back on the job quickly. Therapists use a variety of resources to create a job-specific conditioning program in a simulated work environment.

Lymphedema Management

Certified lymphedema therapists help patients manage lymphedema through the use of complete decongestive therapy (CDT). Treatments are specialized to match the unique condition of each patient.

Orthotics

Seventy-five percent of Americans experience foot problems at one time or another. At Saint Francis Medical Center, feet are scanned by a computerized system that generates a 3-D view of each foot to ensure a proper fit before orthotics are processed. Customized orthotics can be installed in running shoes, heels, dress shoes, work shoes or any other foot ware. The goal is to provide enhanced biomechanics and feet alignment.

Sports Medicine Program

Whether for competition or recreation, Saint Francis Medical Center’s Sports Medicine program has been keeping athletes at their best since 1995. In addition to fostering athletic excellence, Saint Francis’ Sports Medicine team – physicians, certified athletic trainers and licensed physical therapists – has been helping athletes identify, recover from and prevent injuries. Women’s Health

Various treatments are available to women to evaluate and treat incontinence, pelvic floor weakness, dysfunction/pain, postsurgical conditions and prenatal and postnatal care.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists and assistants at Saint Francis Medical Center are focused on increasing independence and improving quality of life. This involves developing individualized treatment programs for patients to help them reach goals in regard to the social, emotional and physiological effects of illnesses and injuries, including spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and dementia. Caregivers also assist patients in restoring daily living activities, such as self-care, work and leisure.

Driver Evaluation

A pre-driving evaluation helps determine next steps in individuals’ driving independence.

Speech Therapy

Saint Francis Medical Center provides speech evaluations and assessments of language and swallowing, as well as all areas of speech pathology. After an initial assessment is completed, a plan of care is established with input from the patient’s family.

Pediatric Rehabilitation

The specialized pediatric rehabilitation program consists of an interdisciplinary team of physical, occupational and speech therapists with a focus on treating communication, physical, social and behavioral needs. Therapists are experienced at keeping children motivated during therapy sessions.
